MARYSVILLE, Ohio — Because we don't know what's happening on today's farms, going vegan — the forgoing of meat, eggs and dairy products — is the safest way to ensure animals are being treated humanely and compassionately.

So says the director of investigations for Mercy for Animals — the pro-vegan animal rights organization that released four weeks of undercover video in late May, of apparent, intentional abuse to dairy cattle at a farm in Plain City.

I guess there is the argument of what is common place on these farms. The question of whether raising livestock, or if any animal slaughter is humane, is the a question many people ask before making a decision about their consumer choices. Go vegan if you think its wrong, otherwise keep eating the produce from an industry of death, torture and slavery...But they're only animals right?

"Humane" means to alleviate suffering. These animals that are brought to the butchers are fit for life and not in any pain so there is no "suffering" to end --- But only "suffering" to cause. We don't "need" to eat animals to thrive. Millions do so on a plant based diet. If we say we only use animals "when necessary" surely we should stop killing animals for is the frivolous want of their fatty flesh.

Yes, they are "only" animals... But so are we! And they value their lives equal to the way we value our own. Want to create a better world? Eat like you mean it - Go Vegan

The argument is over where the line between humane animal practices and cruelty, abuse and neglect should be drawn. I'd like to see it all go eventually, but that is going to be a really long fought struggle. Definitely Go Vegan!
